After the advent of the ACA (ObamaCare) insurance plans were categorized by metal tier. Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Most people and employers choose the Silver option. The out of pocket maximum for most silver plans are $7,000 to $7,900. What does that mean? All of your expenses such as office visits, x-ray and lab co-pays fill this $7,000 bucket. That is the maximum yearly amount you pay for services, hospitalization etc. If you are unlucky and have a surgery in December and have more services in January your out of pocket bill starts all over again. Potentially you could owe $14,000. Open enrollment is coming up. Stay awake in that meeting and ask questions. Ask about accident insurance. See if your company offers it.
